Come on down to the farm! That is, Common Good City Farm, to explore the programmatic and organizational practices that lead to effective youth development outcomes. Asset-based approaches to community development and organizing is a fairly common endeavour in our sector, but how can we maximize success, when working with and around the challenges that the children and youth we serve experience? We will be joined by co-facilitators Peter Guttmacher and Adrienne Bard who have years of experience in the youth development field and will serve as resources for us during this session. We will also review the Youth Program Quality Intervention and the Program Quality Assesment tool that can be used to assess your program on these practices and will be required for out-of-school time funding through Learn24. Lots of handouts will be provided!

Outcomes- Participants will:

Understand how asset-based approaches to working with young people support the universal outcomes that they naturally seek to meet
Identify programmatic and organizational best-practices taht strategically support the three cornerstone youth development outcomes of "Safety and Structure," "Belonging and Membership," and "Self-Worth"
Translate and scale these human development strategies for work with adults
Engage in an introduction to the quality and research behind the Youth Program Quality intervention and Program Quality Assessment tools
Review an overview of the Youth Program Quality Intervention (YPQI) and Program Quality Assessment tools
Overview supports and resources that the Weikart Center can provide to programs interested in learning more

Our Facilitators are:

Peter Guttmacher served for more than a decade as the Director of Programming and Curricula Development at the DC trust for youth, where he had the pleasure of working personally with a wide spectrum of DC's youth-serving nonprofits. He later served as the Senior Advisor for Program Quality on the DC Deputy Mayor for Education's Out-of-School Time System Set-Up Team and facilitated the citywide community decision-making process that resulted in the adoption of the Weikart system of assessment. He is a former teacher, the author of nine books for young people and adults, and a certified facilitator of Advancing Youth Development.

As a Portfolio Manager at the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, a unit of the Forum for Youth Investment, Adrienne Bard works with leaders in out-of-school time programs across the country and UK on city, state, and national quality improvement systems. She brings passion for both youth development and efficient systems to the work she does with her partners; work that ultimately supports these leaders to bring higher quality programming to environments where young people learn and thrive.

The closest Metro Station is Shaw-Howard University (7th and S Street Exit) on the Green and Yellow lines, about an 8 minute walk away. There is moderate street parking available, though there are no nearby parking lots.

In the case of inclement weather, the session will be postponed and held at the same location on Tuesday, September 17 from 10am-12pm.
