About this event

============= IMPORTANT INFO ================

PLEASE NOTE: THIS BIKE RIDE IS NOT A RACE AND ISN'T PLANNED TO GET ON TIME FOR THE MARCH IN GLASGOW AT 1PM. THE RIDE IS A PROTEST ITSELF. WE MAY GET THERE DURING THE MARCH OR THE SPEECHES.

This bike ride is not a race. We intend for this bike ride to be as accessible as possible, so that as many people as possible attend, and we send a really big message. This bike ride is also free, but we would appreciate a donation if you can spare some money.

Don't worry if this is the longest distance you will have ever cycled, we will support you. After you sign up we can add you to a group chat where we will organise practice rides to help build your confidence, and keep you updated on the big ride itself. The route passes by several train stations, so do not worry if you don't think you can ride the whole distance, you can either leave or join us at various points along the way. We will confirm where and when these are soon.

Meet time: 7:45am

Departure time: 8:00am

Route Length: 45 miles

Route Map: Click here for GPS map.

Average pace: 6 mph / Recommended pace: 8-10 mph (This will enable you to arrive in Glasgow by 3:30pm)

We will put on a minimum of one rest stop, with snacks, and hope to have a support vehicle to assist those who suffer mechanical failures, but recommend that you bring a spare inner tube and a bike pump in case you get a flat tire. You should also bring a packed lunch and some water, cycling 45 miles will definitely make you hungry! If we have enough people we will approach Transport Scotland to facilitate road closures for us.

This is a completely volunteer run endeavour, if you would like to help please email edincriticalmass@gmail.com

We would like people to come forward to help with the following roles:-

Stewards - to guard difficult junctions, stop cars getting between riders and generally help with less experienced riders.

First aiders - anyone with a first aid certificate or medical qualification.

Back markers - to keep at the back and stay with anyone whos bike has issues or who needs to stop.

Cargo bikers - anyone with a cargo bike or similar which can carry lots of supplies such as spare drinks and chocolate!

============= IMPORTANT INFO ================

On Saturday the 6th of November, cyclists from all over the UK will descend on Glasgow for the world's most important climate change conference. This is our chance to make the leaders of the world understand that the future of transport must rely on greener, safer, healthier travel.

We all know climate change is getting worse. The recent IPCC report stated that this is now a "code red" for humanity. According to the UK government we know that transportation is the biggest carbon emitting sector in the UK. Cars cause climate change, and we need an alternative. It's also questionable that we'll be able to produce enough lithium for electric cars to replace all of the combustion engine vehicles around the world, to say nothing of the ecologically devastating, carbon emitting processes required to mine that lithium. Cars, electric or otherwise, will not save us.

Thankfully, we already have the technology we need to replace the majority of car journeys. The average distance of a car journey in the UK is 7.8 miles. Whilst this distance is easy by bike, many people choose not to cycle because they think roads are too dangerous. The best way to convince people to start cycling is to build cycling infrastructure to make everyone safer. We saw how quickly fully segregated cycle lanes could be placed in cities across the country during lockdown, but we're now watching many of these be torn out by councils with no understanding of the gravity of the situation.

We need you to join us on a cycle to COP26, the world's largest and most important climate change conference to tell the governments of the world that bicycles, not cars, must become our primary mode of transport. Trillions are spent globally on infrastructure to support cars, from oil tankers to roads. All we are asking is for some of that money to be diverted towards a cleaner transport method, to prevent deaths from climate change, traffic collisions and pollution. Join Us!
