About this event

  • Paid venue parking

Welcome to the very first Community Gamelan in Edinburgh! Directly translated, Gamelan means "orchestra". It is a traditional Indonesian art form used for community building, spiritual devotion, and ritual. Each instrument fits within the same pentatonic scale, meaning that there are only 5 notes the gamelan can play - so there are no wrong notes, ever! As long as you can keep a steady rhythm, you can play in a Gamelan. There are roles for beginners up to more advanced, so opportunities will grow with you as you grow!

Sessions will be by month.

June= Introductory sessions for absolute beginners. 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th.

July= Continued weekly sessions 12th, 19th, 26th (No practice on the 5th) Opt-in videographer collaboration, on location at the Waters of Leith.

August= Continued weekly sessions 16th, 23rd, 30th (no practice on the 2nd and 9th). Opt-in first public performance!

Sessions will include some talking and learning, some demonstration, and mostly playing music together. The music is very hypnotic, so time will absolutely fly! People leave having had not just a sound bath, but a loooong therapeutic soak.

All instruments provided by Beltane Soundsphere.

TICKETS are £5 / person for each session, or buy a set of tickets at a discount. We are also accepting donations! Proceeds go to purchasing new Community Gamelan instruments and maintaining the Soundsphere space.

How to get there: Best to use the Tram. Runs every 10 mins. TRAM STOP is Edinburgh Park Central, on the back step of our building! Exit to the left, over the footbridge, and first building on the right.

Address is 7 Lochside Avenue. The actual parking lot has been blocked off, but there is room for 4 cars to park in the mouth of the driveway in front of the barriers off of Lochside Avenue. Nearby public parking garage here:

https://www.apcoa.co.uk/parking-in/edinburgh/edinburgh-park/ There is a fee to park but it is very affordable.

You must walk a few minutes up to the entrance. It is a wheelchair accessible building with a key-card lift. Studio is located on the 2nd floor. External door is propped open, Ring the intercom for the lift - we will come down to get you with the key card, or just come up the stairs from the lobby.

Please arrive at 3pm, get a cuppa, socialise and explore Soundsphere! Event starts at 3:30pm.
