Peace Boat is an international Japan-based NGO that works for a peaceful and sustainable world through global educational voyages onboard a large passenger ship which carries the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) logo on the hull. Peace Boat’s Ecoship, a 60,000 ton, 2,000 passenger capacity nature-inspired vessel which will sail as a flagship for the SDGs and be the platform for Peace Boat’s future educational voyages.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for emissions from the shipping sector to be zero by 2050. The International Maritime Organization is committed to reducing shipping's total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050. Ecoship Founder and Director, Yoshioka Tatsuya will demonstrate how Ecoship, Peace Boat’s project to build the world’s most sustainable passenger ship, will drive momentum as a transition model for the maritime sector with an estimated 30% CO2 reduction compared to good current design, and a zero-emission target in ports. This will be achieved through energy efficiency in propulsion and accommodation (hull optimization, re-use of waste energy, cleaner fuels, fuel adaptability), utilisation of renewable energies (solar, wind for propulsion, kinetic) and management tools including route and speed optimization. 6,000 m2 of solar panels will cover 100% of the ship’s lighting needs. Ecoship will be fitted with 10 retractable sails with a maximum efficiency of 10% under optimal sailing conditions, fitted with flexible solar panels to maximise the photovoltaic energy output. Sailing into 100 ports yearly on global voyages, Ecoship will be a very visible example of what is possible in the maritime sector.

We are currently in the “Decade of Wind Propulsion” and Gavin Allwright, Secretary-General of the International Windship Association (IWSA) of which Peace Boat Ecoship is a member, will introduce the role of windpower in the maritime sector with a special video. IWSA, a not-for-profit, membership association, promotes wind propulsion for commercial shipping worldwide to decrease GHG emissions. IWSA predicts that there could be up to 10,000 ships having some form of wind propulsion by 2030. Wind is zero emission and can provide 5-20% of propulsion energy on a retrofit. Moreover, if wind is placed at the centre of decarbonisation, it has the potential to cover the cost of all other technology and fuel development.

The event will further expand the theme of climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience by exploring Ecoship's contribution to climate action through the diverse activities of NGO Peace Boat. Our thirty-nine years’ experience provides the framework for numerous educational programmes, advocacy campaigns and applied research, as well as hosting international conferences and world-class exhibitions on green technologies, sustainable development and climate action. The event will hear from youth leader and climate advocate, Nathalia Lawen from Seychelles, alumni of Peace Boat’s annual Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme, an endorsed event of the Fijian COP23 Presidency which brings youth leaders from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) onboard Peace Boat’s existing passenger ship for capacity training and to share their message about the impact on their communities with citizens and government representatives in the countries visited and at the UN.

The event will be focused on maritime shipping and will also include educational programmes and will be aimed at a general audience without specialist knowledge in the field.

The design of the Green Zone reflects a state-of-art concept of sustainability and interconnectedness with the surrounding nature, which are essential perspectives towards climate action. The Green Zone is inspired by the elements of nature and based on the conscious reflection of trees, leaves, cobwebs, and flowers. It looks like a lotus flower from above. Five large exhibition areas represent the petals of the flower, with hallways constructed from sustainable materials like woods and fabrics connecting the different areas together as stimulated from cobwebs.
