Dun Laoire Walking Tour
Overview
Dún Laoghaire East Pier Walking Tour – Where History Meets the Sea
Stroll along the East Pier of Dún Laoghaire and uncover the powerful stories hidden in the rocks. This guided walking tour brings to life the harbour’s rich maritime past, from heroic rescues to tragic shipwrecks — all set against the stunning backdrop of Dublin Bay.
Stand where Captain John McNeill Boyd led a courageous but fatal rescue mission during the storm of 1861, a moment that cemented his legacy in Irish naval history. Learn about the enduring bravery of the RNLI, whose lifeboat crews have protected these waters for almost two centuries.
We’ll reflect on the tragedy of the RMS Leinster, torpedoed just outside the harbour in 1918 with the loss of over 500 lives — the worst maritime disaster in the Irish Sea. And go further back to the devastating wrecks of the HMS Rochdale and the Prince of Wales in 1807, which spurred the very creation of this harbour, built to make the coast safer for all seafarers.
The pier also holds echoes of rebellion — it was once a walking path for Roger Casement, the revolutionary whose legacy still stirs debate and pride. This is more than a walk. It’s a powerful step into Ireland’s past — where every stone tells a story.
Join us on the East Pier — and walk through history.
The tour near Dun Laoire Dart station and takes 90 minutes to complete. Total walking distance is approximately 3.5 kms
