Unleash your inner book artist!

Join North Charleston Artist-in-Residence, Najee Wilson, for a hands-on workshop exploring two distinct and beautiful bookbinding techniques. In this 4-hour session, participants age 16+ will learn the elegant simplicity of Drum Leaf Binding, a simple and compelling method perfect for showcasing individual sheets, photographs, or artwork. You'll create your own unique drum leaf-bound book to take home.

We'll then delve into the fascinating world of Japanese Bookbinding. You'll be introduced to traditional materials, tools, and a fundamental four-hole stab binding technique. Discover the clean lines and secure structure of this ancient craft as you begin to create a second, Japanese-style book.

What you'll learn:

  • The principles and construction of Drum Leaf Binding.
  • How to prepare and assemble a Drum leaf-bound book.
  • An introduction to the history and aesthetics of Japanese bookbinding.
  • Basic Japanese bookbinding tools and materials.
  • The steps involved in the four-hole stab binding technique.

What you'll take home:

  • A completed Drum Leaf-bound book.
  • A partially completed (or fully completed, depending on pace) four-hole stab-bound book.
  • The foundational knowledge needed to explore these bookbinding styles further.

You don't need any prior bookbinding experience! All materials will be provided.

Come prepared to be inspired and create something beautiful with your own hands!
