About this Event

Artificial intelligence is being used to adjust our credit and price our insurance. "Predictive" algorithmic policing is amplifying existing human bias on our streets. Many machine learning experts can’t explain why their software acts the way it does.

But fear not! People like Margaret Mitchell are working on ways to evolve artificial intelligence towards positive goals. Margaret leads the Ethical Artificial Intelligence team in Google's Research & Machine Intelligence group. Her work combines computer vision, natural language processing, social media, many statistical methods, and insights from cognitive science.

Join us as we discuss how to avoid a Terminator-style SkyNet reality and how we can begin demanding more transparency and criticality around artificial intelligence.

Margaret Mitchell is a Senior Research Scientist in Google's Research & Machine Intelligence group, where she leads the Ethical Artificial Intelligence team. Her research generally involves vision-language and grounded language generation, focusing on how to evolve artificial intelligence towards positive goals. This includes research on helping computers to communicate based on what they can process, as well as projects to create assistive and clinical technology from the state of the art in AI. Her work combines computer vision, natural language processing, social media, many statistical methods, and insights from cognitive science.

Data Rules Everything Around Me (D.R.E.A.M.) is a FREE & OPEN conversation series facilitated by Nick Briz & Jon Satrom. Artists, writers, developers, and other cultural producers discuss their research and perspectives on the data that fuels the systems that run our world.
