Description:

What can kids (and adults) learn from drag performers? In this lecture, drag queen and scholar Lil Miss Hot Mess will discuss her research on "drag pedagogy," offering insight into the diverse forms of knowledge and skills that drag queens, drag kings, and other drag artists impart through Drag Story Hours and nightlife performances alike. In so doing, she argues that drag's historical cultural contributions go well beyond upending stereotypical gender roles to enacting imaginative forms of play that promote critical thinking, creativity, and community building. In addition to speaking about her work with Drag Story Hour, she will also touch on research on drag history and the intersections of drag and digital technology.

Lil Miss Hot Mess is the author of the children's books Make Your Own Rainbow: A Drag Queen's Guide to Color, If You’re a Drag Queen and You Know It, and The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish. She serves as the board president of Drag Story Hour, co-founded the #MyNameIs Campaign that challenged social media "real names" policies, and has appeared on world-class stages like SFMOMA and Saturday Night Live. When not twirling, she is an assistant professor at the University of Arizona, and has published in academic journals like Curriculum Inquiry as well as media outlets like HuffPost, Slate, and Wired.
