Building community is an important component of the the Illuminating Our Voices (IOV) writing workshops. Previous participation ensures  a shared understanding and respect for the culture of IOV.

When is the next Illuminating Our Voices (IOV) generative writing workshop?

Accepted Answer

Every month IOV offers [2] generative writing workshop series . Both are held online the 1st [3] Sundays of the month. MORNINGS Rise Write is 7:30-9 AM EST <and> EVENINGS Unwind Write is 7:30-9 PM EST.  The same schedule is followed every month.

Why is DRAFT SHARE specifically for POC/BIPOC participants?

Overall peer review workshops are not abundantly available. The availability is radically reduced for POC/BIPOC. Many POC/BIPOC writers seek to minimize: being 'the only one', having their work not understood or read with unconscious bias, having to educate or explain, etc.

Question 4

Do we share our drafts in this workshop? When? How?

Accepted Answer

Yes, drafts are encouraged to be shared (& read) in advance. Drafts are sent to the facilitator, and the facilitator disseminates the drafts to the group. Specific instructions are sent once  registration is completed.

Are there guidelines for Intellectual Property and Confidentiality?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The guidelines are sent out with registration and again when copies of the drafts are disseminated. This is another reason why previous  participation in IOV generative workshops is a required criteria. It is important that every participant  feels comfortable to fully engage.

I am working on a large project. How can my draft benefit from this workshop?

Accepted Answer

It is not uncommon for participants in both Generative & Draft Share workshops to be working on larger projects. Identify a portion of your project that would most benefit from feedback. Please be sure to be within the word count.

I want  feedback on a longer  draft and personalized guidance. Does IOV offer these services?

Accepted Answer

Yes, IOV can support writers with longer drafts and offer personalized guidance. Please send an email  describing your project and what support you are looking for.

In this workshop we will share our drafts and receive balanced feedback. Hear from fellow POC/BIPOC peers: what is stong, what is working and what is unclear, what causes confusion. You will gain insight on how to strengthened your draft for its next iteration.
