We've put together a lineup of five incredible artists who are creating their own unique sounds: DORIS, ZekeUltra, Semiratruth, 1Alkebulan, and Q No Rap Name.

DORIS:

Emerging from that place where hip-hop slurs into ambience and where rap is just a hypnogogic mumble, is Delaware (US) based MC/producer ZekeUltra, who excels in warped and worn beats and woozy, near ambient textures, over which he declaims his truth. Semiratruth:

When Semiratruth chooses to rhyme, they do so well, delving into their existential qualms but also showing off their knack for imagery... On “It’s Up” they reference their fragrance, and later rhymes, “Who knew outside felt like this?/Fuck the train, smell like piss.” And on “Nightmoods,” they rhyme, “times get hard fill your cup the plank.”

1Alkebulan is a singer and producer from Washington D.C, who has lived in Brooklyn for the past nine years. They refer to their most recent music as“Afro Dance”, a term that fits in its expansiveness, as so much of their work eludes generic description. Their 2024 album A Bowl for Lilith became my most spun project of last year, easing me through a year full of rough transitions and 90 minute commutes.

Q No Rap Name:

Q No Rap Name is a Philadelphia-based beatmaker, producer, and a notable figure in the city's underground hip-hop scene. He is also known for his role as a co-organizer for the Philly chapter of Flipabeatclub, a collective that brings beatmakers together.
