Event description
Join GEN VIC + MEAA for the launch of our report 'Don't Read the Comments...' and a panel discussion on how to keep women journalists safe.

About this Event

A significant proportion of women journalists experience online harassment, trolling and stalking throughout the course of their careers. Among journalists surveyed, only 16 per cent were aware that their workplace had existing policies to address online abuse.

For journalists, the online sphere is an extension of the workplace. On an organisational level, we need to think about potential safety mechanisms that can be put in place to protect employees, especially freelancers who are even more likely to be susceptible to this form of abuse.

What happens online can be a pervasive representation of people’s beliefs about what is acceptable offline. As online harassment becomes an increasingly gendered issue, it’s unacceptable for major media organisations in Australia to not be contributing to a solution.

Join Gender Equity Victoria and the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance as we launch 'Don't Read the Comments: Enhancing Online Safety for Women Working in the Media' - a series of findings and recommendations on online safety and how we can change the workplace.

The Report will be launched by The Hon. Gabrielle Williams, Minister for Women

Featuring a panel discussion with:

Fiona Patten, MP

Ginger Gorman, author of ‘Troll Hunting’

Bhakthi Puvanenthiran, Editor of ABC Life

Karen Percy, Journalist and MEAA Media Section Vice President
