About this event

Ever heard the story of Sugar Hill Records? They gave us classics like Rapper’s Delight but also became a major cautionary tale about artists signing away their publishing and royalties. 👀

In this workshop, hosted by Bishop’s Academy (a nonprofit), we’ll break down:

Publishing & Royalties 101: What they are, why they matter, and how labels can take advantage if you’re not careful.

The Sugar Hill Example: How one of hip hop’s most legendary labels became the blueprint for what NOT to do.

Tools & Resources: From legal aid for musicians to must-read books, music directories, and insider resources to level up your music hustle.

Opportunities for YOU: Participants will get the chance to apply to perform at our Celebrate Bed Stuy, Music, Art & Business Festival (Spring 2026).

This isn’t a boring workshop. Think of it as a mix of music history, industry gems, networking and real-talk survival tips—all designed to help you protect your art AND your bag. 💼💸

Whether you’re an artist, producer, manager, or just someone curious about how the business side of music works, you’ll walk away with the knowledge to move smarter in the industry.
