DNA Snow Globe (BioMakerSpace Lab)

🧬 DNA Snow Globe Christmas Tree Ornament Class ❄️

Join us at the CELLS BioMakerSpace for a unique, hands-on holiday workshop! Explore the code of life, DNA, and learn about cells. You will become a molecular biologist for the day by extracting DNA molecules from strawberries using a simple and safe method.

You will assemble your own snow globe, featuring the extracted strawberry DNA as the "snow". 

This is not your typical DNA extraction! Instead of the common snot-like DNA seen in many labs, in this workshop, you will learn a special method to extract flaky, snow-like DNA that is perfect for creating a beautiful Christmas tree ornament! 

Participants get to take their unique, festive creation home!

Kids as young as 6 (or requiring extra assistance) can participate with a participating adult.  A ticket must be purchased for both the child and the helping adult and both will receive their own set of materials. We have limited space; the lab can only accommodate a total of 7 people (including the instructor).

Participants will:

• Learn about cells
• Look at cells under the microscope
• Learn about DNA
• Extract flaky, snow-like  DNA from strawberries 
• Assemble their own snow globe, featuring the extracted DNA as the "snow".
• Take their unique creation home.

Materials Provided

All materials, including strawberries, extraction supplies, and snow globe components, will be provided.
