Learn to mend your own textiles with Claudia, who is a professional seamstress with 30+ years experience!
This small hands-on class will be focused on repairing holes in non-stretch fabrics, particularly denim & twill. We will talk about different ways to apply patches, techniques for linear tears vs holes with fabric missing, and some tips and tricks for keeping it all aligned as you work! You will learn how to repair a garment of your own (or practice on scrap fabric) and leave being able to repair your own items! You will even get a little kit of take-home supplies for your personal mending projects!
This course welcomes brand-new menders and those with experience.
You will learn to repair woven garments such as jeans, denim or twill jackets (not athletic or rain wear), cotton twill pants, linen pants and non-stretch shirts. Twill has a texture with diagonal lines running down the fabric, which are created by the weave.
To Bring:
- an item or a few to repair (denim, twill, woven canvas / cotton / linen, etc...)
- reading glasses, if you use them
- scissors*
- patching fabric, if you have something specific you want to use*
*Repair supplies are provided. Class is capped at 6 participants.
Note on Pricing:
Repair PDX seeks to both pay equitably and keep ticket prices accessible.
Not every event we run is independently solvent. We provide sliding scale, free tickets for volunteers, and other low cost opportunities because of our values. There are limited low-cost tickets and we rely on those with more financial support to pay the higher end of the sliding scale in order to offset the low-cost tickets. Thus, you will see a variety of ticket prices for the same event and we encourage you to pay what you can.
Proceeds from tickets go directly to paying our wonderful instructors, providing materials for the class, and continuing to host events and workshops like this one!
*If you are a volunteer wanting to join the class when there are no free tickets left, please email margo@repairpdx.org so we can open one up for you.
