Frequently asked questions

Who is this event for?

Anyone who gets their electricity from Longmont Power and Communications and is curious about how things will be changing in the future.

What is distributed energy and virtual power plants, and why should I want to learn about them?

Distributed Energy resources can be things like solar and batteries, but they can also be electric vehicles, heat pumps, smart thermostats--things everyday people have at home. A Virtual Power Plant is a system that can coordinate distributed energy resources to help the grid and benefit the owners.

I don't know much about electric utilities. Why should I come to this meetup?

You won't have to be an expert to take part in the virtual power plant LPC and PRPA are planning. They will take care of all of the technical stuff. But, learning about it now gives you a chance to think about if and how you might want to participate before you have to decide.

I just want my lights to come on, and my things to work. I'm not sure these things apply to me.

The electric grid that powers our homes is changing. Demand for power is growing, and utilities need to find more ways to be sure that we all have the affordable power we need. These new programs are part of that effort. You may want to learn about how they create options to keep your bill lower.
