Dignity of Risk: Empowering Choice & Autonomy
Overview
Description:
This session explores the concept of dignity of risk—the right of individuals to make their own choices, take risks, and experience the consequences as a vital part of personal growth, independence, and self-determination. Participants will examine real-world scenarios, reflect on the balance between duty of care and personal autonomy, and develop strategies to support informed decision-making while respecting each person’s right to live with dignity—even when that includes the possibility of failure. The training emphasizes ethical practice, cultural sensitivity, and collaborative approaches to risk assessment and support planning.

Apply Practical Strategies to Support Informed Decision-Making
Participants will learn and practice approaches to help individuals make informed choices while minimizing unnecessary restrictions.

Participants will identify common attitudes, biases, and organizational practices that may hinder the application of dignity of risk, and develop strategies to advocate for more empowering support models.
