Join us for an evening of art, history, and celebration for the unveiling of two brand new exhibits at the AARC!

Diaspora Offering: Featuring Artists: Allen Yu and Sun-Jue Shin

Sun-Jue Shin and Allen Yu explore and provide a new world for traditional ceremonial objects and rituals to honor the deceased and sustain spiritual connection with generations past. In both Korean and Chinese cultures, fruits and flowers symbolize abundance and good fortune, reminders of heritage and tradition. In this installation, ceramic objects are reimagined through symbolic patterns and thoughtful arrangements, expressing a sense of displacement and the search for belonging. Created by two Asian artists living in Texas, these works are drawn from their shared experiences as drifters, distanced from their ancestral homelands.

Ancestral Visions: Featuring Artist: Sandeep Chandran

Sandeep Chandran explores his family roots in Kerala, India through a combination of digital printed paintings and acrylic paintings made by hand. Chandran's work visualizes his intimate spiritual and diasporic experiences, creating historically rich and mythology-based worlds of healing, belonging, and homecoming. Taking inspiration and direction from culture bearers, art forms, and community rituals integral to his hometown, of Kerala, India, Chandran, realizes his own internal world and visions of ancestry, culture bearing, and myth making in Austin, TX where he currently lives and works.

Come by the exhibit reception to meet Sandeep, Allen, and Sun-Jue and learn about their practices as Asian American artists in Austin, TX. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
