Opening Keynote: The Secret to More Ethical Tech is to Model It on Good Relationships

Not a week passes without an ethical misstep by big tech. Tech thinktanks respond with whitepapers that center on the trifecta of privacy, transparency, and autonomy. And then nothing happens. What if we took a different approach? Instead, let’s model ethics on good relationships. In social psychology, models like Knapp’s relational model are a starting point. Honesty is fundamental. Consent is not just a one-time event. Boundaries are negotiated and revisited. A relationship builds gradually. By following five relationship phases, we can create a new kind of intuitive tech ethics.

About the speaker: Pamela Pavliscak

Pamela Pavliscak studies our emotional relationship with technology. As a creative strategist, she collaborates with organizations like Google, IKEA, and Virgin to craft emotionally intelligent experiences. As faculty at Pratt Institute, she teaches next-gen designers. Her work has been featured in Slate, NPR, and Quartz and she’s spoken at SXSW and TNW. Her book, Emotionally Intelligent Design, charts a tech future with feeling.

Alba Villamil: The Ethical Researcher's Checklist: Protecting User Data Privacy and Security

Amanda Chong: Finding Your Voice - An Introvert’s Journey in Advocating for Users and Inspiring Others

Designing for Trust & Responsibility Panel Discussion

As people who work to create meaningful experiences for our customers, empoyees, users, etc., it's our responsibility to make an impact that's both positive and ethical. We operate at the intersection of humanities and technology, and humans are at the core of the work that we do. Putting their needs first should not only be our goal, but our duty. In this panel discussion led by Olga Perfilieva, we'll hear from three amazing women about how they accomplish this in their work.

Adaora (Spectra) Asala, Product Leader & UX Strategist

Trish Fontanilla, Community & Customer Experience Consultant

Mel Choyce, Senior Product Designer, Automattic
