Los Angeles has more streets than anywhere else in America. They’re our largest public asset, forming and reflecting the character of our neighborhoods, our people, and our city. But civic design has its challenges. Can we think of new innovative ways to design for the masses? How can we change the way we create and sustain the vibrancy of our streets?

Join us for a discussion on "Designing for Public Space" with speaker Nat Gale, Director of the Great Streets Initiative. We'll discuss the notion of public space, civic design, and how Mayor Garcetti's Great Streets Challenge Grant is an opportunity to "disrupt" this process. Pizza and beer will be provided.

Nat Gale

As Great Streets Program Director, Nat Gale oversees the coordination and collaboration across City Departments and with community stakeholders related to Great Street Projects. In the near-term, project implementation will focus on temporary treatments, including creative placemaking, as well as robust community partnerships and programming. Outside of the project specific role, Nat will be overseeing the development of citywide policy guidance to help change burdensome regulations or promote innovative solutions that help create and sustain vibrancy on our streets.

Nat has an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in Civil Engineering with a minor in History, and a dual Master’s degree from USC in Urban Planning and Public Administration. He is an avid cyclist, dedicated transit-user, and a proud pedestrian. Nat previously worked as a transportation planner in NYC, a geotechnical engineer in Portland, OR, and an environmental engineer in LA. He has held a variety of policy positions in the Mayor's Office before focusing on Great Streets.

DRAFT.LA is a series of evening talks bringing together the Los Angeles creative community. DRAFT.LA is providing a platform for the brightest and most dynamic thinkers in LA to talk about their creative processes and insights. We believe fashion designers, architects, set designers, artists, carpenters, and anyone who has a passion for creating new meaningful experiences has a unique story waiting to be shared.

Location

Huge is located at 6100 Wilshire Blvd, 2nd Floor. The building is on the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax, near LACMA and across from the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Parking

There is no parking at 6100 Wilshire. There is plenty of street parking in the area and there are several lots you can park at for a fee, including the Petersen Automotive Museum garage, entrance on Fairfax. If you choose to park at the Petersen, please exit to the rear of the garage and use the 8th Street crosswalk to cross Fairfax.
