This lecture explores user-centric design (UCD) specifically tailored for the creation and optimization of spatial environments. We'll delve into the core principles of UCD and how they translate to designing physical and virtual spaces that are intuitive, engaging, and truly meet the needs of the people who inhabit and interact with them.

___

This lecture will explore the fundamental principles of placing the user at the heart of the design process for physical, virtual, and blended spaces. We will move beyond aesthetics and pure functionality to understand how human behaviors, needs, and perceptions should drive the creation of environments that are not only usable but also intuitive, engaging, and enjoyable.

Participants will gain an understanding of:

Core Principles of User-Centric Design: We'll revisit foundational UCD concepts such as user research, persona development, journey mapping, and iterative prototyping, and discuss their specific application to spatial design.
Understanding the User in Context: Learn techniques for observing and analyzing how people interact with and experience different types of spaces, considering physical, cognitive, and emotional factors. This includes exploring the importance of ergonomics, accessibility, and inclusivity in spatial design.
Key Considerations for Spatial Environments: We'll examine elements unique to spatial design, such as:
Navigation and Wayfinding: Designing intuitive pathways and clear cues.
Proxemics and Personal Space: Understanding cultural and individual spatial preferences.
Sensory Design: The role of light, sound, texture, and even smell in shaping user experience.
Technology Integration: Seamlessly incorporating digital interfaces and interactive elements within physical spaces.
Flexibility and Adaptability: Creating spaces that can evolve with changing user needs.
Emerging Trends (Beyond AI)
Case Studies: We will analyze examples of successful (and unsuccessful) spatial designs across various sectors (e.g., retail, workspaces, public installations, virtual environments) to illustrate the impact of a user-centric approach.

Who is this BEST for?

This session aims to equip designers, architects, urban planners, and anyone involved in shaping our environments with the mindset and foundational knowledge to create spaces that are truly built for the people who use them. Expect an interactive session with opportunities for discussion and critical thinking.
