Let's design our own pop-up parklet that can fit in a PARK(ing) spot for the worldwide celebration of PARK(ing) DAY.

What is it? The number of parks throughout Philadelphia increases dramatically each year on the third Friday in September, when activists, artists, architects, and other citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks. Known as PARKing) Day, this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of 140 square feet of public space. The event is a global, public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people.

How did it start? PARK(ing) Day was founded by Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for green spaces in urban environments. Philadelphia celebrated PARK(ing) Day for the first time in 2008 with over 25 installations for relaxing, cycling, creating art, education, and socializing.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in my registration?

Two-hour session with introduction + instruction, meeting with guest designer(s), materials and supplies for the workshop, and snacks/beverages.

Can youth/child participate?

Always! These experiences are great for both the grown-up and the youth, pre-school through high school. Youth 7+ years of age will likely be able to utilize all the tools with minimal to no assistance. Younger designers will need some assistance.

Is this like a "paint with a twist" or "arts and crafts" event?

No. It's more! We want you to really flex the inherent designer in you. We look at our workshops like a studio lesson, we discuss about a design discipline(s), learn how to sketch out ideas, prototype/test those ideas, use design tools (depending on the doodad), and construct a doodad to take home.
