"Effortful retrieval makes for stronger learning and retention" (43) argues Henry L. Roediger, III in Make It Stick. (Nota bene: he is this year's keynote speaker at TLTCon.) But how does "effortful retrieval" work within the second language classroom? It's a mouthful of a pedagogical expression and the focus nonetheless of a workshop where we'll consider not only how the strategy can enhance current teaching practices but also imagine new teaching exercises in secondary language classrooms. There's much to gain from the workshop. We'll be able to engage more deeply with Roediger when he visits the College of Charleston campus on 16 May 2019 and create a "more favorable"(46) classroom experience for our students in the meantime. One further incentive? A cup of homemade ice cream if you participate. Space is limited.
