DBT with Adolescents: Helping Teens Build a Life Worth Living

Join Illume: The Behavioral Health Center of Excellence on September 11th-12th, 2025 from 9:00am-4:00pm (CST)

Description:

Treating teenagers who struggle with pervasive emotion dysregulation and are at high risk for suicidal behavior and self-injury can be overwhelming and challenging for therapists. Dialectical Behavior Therapy, an evidenced based treatment initially created to treat adults with suicidal behaviors and Borderline Personality Disorder, has been adapted to help teenagers learn to manage their severe emotion dysregulation and build a life worth living. In this training you will receive an overview of DBT’s foundational theories and structure; learn ways DBT has been adapted for adolescents and their families; identify adolescents who would benefit from the treatment and learn about DBT skills.

This training is presented by Emily Dreher, LPC, DBT-LC. She has clinical experience providing outpatient therapy and in home crisis counseling. Her specialties include working with individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder using Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Prolonged Exposure. Emily is also an Adjunct Lecturer in the Applied Health Behavior Research graduate program at Washington University.
