Frequently asked questions

Do I need to wear special clothing for the hive tour?

Yes. We provide bee suits and veils for safety. Please wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and avoid wearing strong scents (like perfumes or scented lotions). Please do not wear skirts.

Is it safe to be near the bees?

Yes, with proper gear and guidance. The hive visit is supervised, and safety is a top priority. However, guests with known bee allergies should consult their doctor before attending. If you are allergic to bee stings, please let us know in advance.

How long is the event?

The full experience lasts about 1 hour, with approximately 30 minutes at the hives and 60 minutes for the honey tasting, but we do allow for two hours as there are often a lot of questions.

What honeys will we taste?

You'll try five unique honeys from around the world. Flavors may include clover, buckwheat, orange blossom, wildflower, or even rare varietals like eucalyptus, depending on availability. If you have a particular honey you would like to taste, please let us know and we will try to accommodate.

Can I buy honey or other products afterward?

Yes! We usually have a small farmstand available with our own local honey, beeswax lip balm, and other products.

Where are you located?

Riverview Road Apiary is in Chillicothe, Illinois—just north of Peoria.

Is there a group rate or private tour option?

Yes. We can accommodate private groups, homeschool co-ops, garden clubs, or corporate outings. Just reach out and we’ll customize your experience. We prefer no more than groups of 10.

What happens if it rains?

Hive tours are weather-dependent for safety. In case of rain, we may reschedule or offer an extended honey tasting and indoor beekeeping Q&A.
