Results from the State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey 2018

“We are competing with fast food chains and retail stores but our staff have far more responsibility and work under more stressful situations than those who flip burgers or ring up sales.”

“Prejudiced, stereotypical and discriminatory attitudes and behaviors have been emboldened, and we hear from our young people that they are suffering as a result.”

“The US nonprofit sector is resilient, collaborative, innovative, and determined to address the most complex and enduring problems in our country.”

Almost 3,400 leaders of nonprofits across all 50 states and a wide range of sizes, missions, and work areas raised their voices through the latest State of the Nonprofit Sector Survey. They said:

  • Demand continues to rise faster than nonprofits’ ability to meet it: 86% of Survey respondents say demand for their services is rising, and 57% say they don’t think they can meet it.

  • They continue to move forward with characteristic determination and creativity: 54% of respondents increased staff and 55% increased compensation in 2017.

  • They are very worried about the people they serve: 67% say the federal government’s 2017 actions and words made life harder for their clients.
