About this event

Julie B. Johnson (Moving Our Stories) and Victoria Lemos (Archive Atlanta Podcast) have collaborated on site-responsive choreographic initiatives that utilize archival and embodied memory research to lift up Atlanta's unique histories. Join us as we explore three different sites of memory:

  • digital archive collections
  • historical neighborhoods
  • our moving bodies

We will share research tools and strategies to incorporate into your creative practice.Prompts from Moving Our Stories’ Dancing in Darktown project will take us through online collections to a walk along the historic Auburn Ave corridor, and then to our embodied memories through collective movement.

Light refreshments will be served.

Advanced registration required.

What to Expect?

  • Doors open at 9:30a. Come get acclimated and meet other participants!

  • We will walk around the Auburn Avenue/Edgewood Ave neighborhood to view historic sites connected to the area's dance hall history.
  • There will be a break to reflect, eat, and connect
  • We will conclude by dance-making together! Exploring embodied memory mapping and other strategies to bring the archival and site research into a collective, creative practice.

Access Information

  • Stairs are not required to enter the building or access our gathering space.
  • Restrooms are available
  • We will go on a site visit/walking tour around the neighborhood for about 45 minutes max and view sites from street level. While most sidewalks are accessible to mobility aids, unexpected obstructions may be present due to construction, damage to pavement, pedestrian traffic, or vehicles. We will do our best to check out our route ahead of the workshop.
