As IT platforms have become more automated they have also become more difficult to debug. Instead of servers we talk about nodes, virtual systems, “VMs”, containers, and object storage. Unlike traditional systems these can move around and change names based on the whims of their underlying virtualization platforms. Cloud platforms take it a step further. In the cloud we expect to move workloads across data centers, change IP addresses, and stop and start systems as part of normal operation. As these things are happening the operations team must deal with all the typical application problems of memory, connectivity, and program crashes. To deal with these complexities modern IT systems require a capability called “Observability”. Instana is the leader in Observability across the entire IT platform.

You have two angles for solving IT platform problems in the era of the cloud. The first is what practitioners call “Problem based”. This approach attacks an IT Platform problem based on it’s business outcome. It could be “My product catalog takes too long to load and annoys our online customers”. Or it could be “My maintenance teams can’t update repair orders when they finish a job in the field”. In these cases the problem solver uses Instana to focus on the layers of a particular application, dive in the data, create insights from the data, and take corrective action. The second angle to solving platform problems is to activate observability across the platform. This approach is called “Platform based”. It is the approach favored by Site Reliability Engineers, Enterprise Architects, and IT Operations Managers. When an IT shop recognizes stubborn problems with failed customer interactions, slow systems, and burned out ops employees, this approach can make more sense. Observability is a different approach than prior generations of system monitoring and APM. When an IT shop is must think differently about APM across an entire portfolio of IT assets, observability is how they move forward.

In this webinar, consultants and practitioners will explain the two approaches with some examples of each. In addition, they will show a brief demo of how to use the tools in each case.
