Our last speaker series of 2025 features three practitioners using artificial intelligence to improve health care interviewed by Rick Hamilton. Please join us for this timely and relevant conversation about the possibilities, and limits, of AI Applications for Human Health.

Speakers


Rick Hamilton is the Founder and Principal of Hamilton and Boss, where he advises organizations on strategy, platform modernization, and the use of generative AI. With more than 25 years of experience in software development, intellectual property, and AI/ML, and over 1,060 issued U.S. patents, he has established a long track record of innovation. While his work spans multiple industries, his expertise in applying generative AI and cloud-based platforms has significant implications for accelerating innovation in healthcare and improving how advanced technologies are brought into practice.


Arun Krishnaraj MD, MPH, is a Professor of Radiology and Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia. From 2011-2013, he served as junior faculty at Harvard Medical School, where he worked in the division of Abdominal Imaging and Intervention at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

He is a passionate advocate for the specialty of radiology and serves in numerous leadership positions in organized radiology, most notably as a member of the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology, where he chairs the Commission on Patient and Family Centered Care.

Dr. Krishnaraj’s leadership efforts have been recognized by the American Medical Association Foundation, which awarded him their prestigious Excellence in Medicine Leadership award in 2012. He is one of only 4 early career physicians in the country to have received this honor.

Each year since 2015, Dr. Krishnaraj has been included in the “Best Doctors in America” list. And he has been honored with the Dean’s Award for Clinical Excellence and the Paul Dee Teacher of the Year award at the University of Virginia. In addition, he has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and as a Fellow of the Society of Abdominal Radiology.


Dr. Miaomiao Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the School of Engineering at UVA. Her research develops AI-driven models for medical and biological imaging, with applications in cardiovascular imaging, neuroimaging, and surgical planning. She focuses on creating deep learning and statistical approaches for tasks such as image segmentation, registration, and shape analysis, advancing the ability of AI to interpret complex biomedical data. Her work is aimed at building the next generation of imaging tools to improve diagnosis and treatment in healthcare.


Dr. Stefan Bekiranov is a Professor in the School of Medicine at UVA. His research applies machine learning and AI to multi-omics and clinical datasets to predict patient outcomes in diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disorders. By developing explainable AI and meta-learning frameworks, his lab creates models that integrate genomic, molecular, and clinical variables to advance precision medicine. His work helps translate complex biomedical data into actionable insights that support individualized care and improved survival outcomes.
