Description

Current Concepts in Evaluation and Treatment of the Hip Region

Keelan Enseki MS, MPT, ATC, OCS, SCS, CSCS

RobRoy Martin, PhD, PT, CSCS

Course Description

Musculoskeletal related hip disorders are receiving more attention with advancements in diagnostic and surgical techniques. Diagnosis and treatment of individuals with hip related pathology can be difficult secondary to the close interrelationship between the lumbopelvic complex, soft tissue structures, and hip joint. This course will integrate lecture and laboratory material offering techniques that will support evidence-based treatment of hip joint disorders. Mobilization techniques directed at treating the hip complex will be taught. Evaluation techniques for the hip joint and surrounding soft tissue that will allow for a classification-based treatment program will also be discussed. Laboratory sessions will include mobilization techniques for the hip as well as progressive exercises. Current diagnostic imaging, advances in surgical techniques, and post-surgical rehabilitation will also be discussed.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the relevant musculoskeletal anatomy in the region of the hip joint
  • Describe and apply the suggested classification system to individuals with pain in the hip region
  • Describe imaging studies and the diagnoses of the hip region that may be potentially recognized by these studies
  • Describe common pathological disorders affecting the hip region
  • Apply treatment techniques based on classification of patients with hip region pain
  • Discuss recent advances in hip joint surgery
  • Discuss sport-specific considerations for athletes with hip injuries
  • Describe and appropriately apply patient-reported outcome instruments for patients with hip pathology
