PRS invites you to a curator's walkthrough of Tarot in Time with James Jude Tarot and dama, an exhibition exploring the rich visual and symbolic history of Tarot through a collection of rare, out-of-print decks and original art.
We begin with the roots of Tarot, featuring reproductions of Mamluk Playing Cards— believed to have been the first deck of playing cards introduced to Europe in the fourteenth century —and the Visconti-Sforza Tarot, the oldest surviving Tarot deck, which shaped the imagery we recognize today.
In this main gallery, you'll find six original 19th-century woodblock-printed cards from historical decks, offering a tangible connection to centuries of Tarot tradition.
A highlight is the 1975 hand-silkscreened Major Arcana portfolio by Mick Taylor and Sheena McCall, printed in a limited edition of 150, inspired by P.D. Ouspensky’s esoteric writings. Nearby, you’ll see John Augustus Knapp’s original Tarot Trumps, created for Manly P. Hall's Secret Teachings of All Ages, displayed above a modern reimagining of the Marziano Tarot by Robert M. Place.
In the PRS Library, we feature fifteen original works from ten contemporary Tarot artists working around the globe today, showcasing a diverse and vibrant evolution of the medium.
Across the courtyard, the auditorium lobby houses three display cases of vintage Tarot decks and ephemera from the 1960s–80s, including rare, signed first editions. These focus on the archetypes of The Hermit and The Wheel of Fortune, representing the energies of 2025 and 2026.
Tarot in Time is part of the inaugural Los Angeles Festival of Tarot (May 30–June 1), which brought together leading voices in Tarot for workshops, talks, readings, and an esoteric marketplace. Visit www.lafestivaloftarot.com for full details.
Join us on this journey through the history, artistry, and mystery of the Tarot.
