Among the Library’s many printed treasures are dozens of games and puzzles that have delighted generations of children and adults alike. In this talk and viewing, curator Alice Tonkinson will show international examples such as 200-year-old jigsaw puzzlesand vibrant 20th century Japanese games as well as locally designed Australian board games that chart the development of the industry here. Far from being just about entertainment, these items reveal insights into history, culture and design and reflect moments that have captured the public imagination.

Alice Tonkinson is a Librarian in the Collection Acquisition and Curation branch. With a background in history, and museum and heritage studies, Alice has worked extensively with the Library’s maps, ephemera, bookplate and poster collections. She has curated many displays and exhibitions at the Library, including the 2022 exhibition Maps of the Pacific.
