The power of poetry as a form of self-expression and storytelling has long been recognized in the Black community. From the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary spoken word poetry, Black poets have used their words to convey their experiences, culture, and emotions. In many spaces, this is celebrated; however, Black sensuality and eroticism seem to be the part that gets left out. If poetry is a form of expression, then it is natural to consider how expansive that expression can be. Enter Cuffed: An Ode to the Erotic, a curated celebration of eroticism and the joy cultivated in the intimate space via poetry and spoken word.
Queer Black artists have been selected to perform their works in an exhibition-style show, accented with dance, and arousing lines from each artist displayed-- evoking the desire embodied in the imagery of their pieces. Through this work, we are inviting attendees to engage in sensuality with a renewed appreciation for the erotic.
