Overview

A Performance by and Conversation With Musical Artists OKAN

Join us for a special performance and conversation led by Ruthie Meadows, Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Fellow, alongside Marysol Quevedo, associate professor of musicology at the Frost School of Music.

Exploring themes of immigration, justice, and love, the Afro-Cuban jazz band OKAN takes its name from the word for “heart” in Santería. With vocals in Spanish, Yoruba, and Spanglish, the band is led by Havana-born violinist and vocalist Elizabeth Rodríguez and her wife, percussionist and vocalist Magdelys Savigne, from Santiago de Cuba.

This event marks the culmination of Ruthie Meadows’ semester-long residency as the Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Fellow at the Cuban Heritage Collection.
