Creature Coders | Grades 7-9

By Van Andel Institute for Education

Overview

4-day Camp For Students Entering Grades 7-9 in Fall 2026

Embark on a cutting-edge adventure where biology meets computer science! In this immersive camp, students explore the fascinating connections between living systems and digital design. Campers will analyze real animal adaptations and behaviors, to understand how organisms sense and respond to their environment. Using creative coding tools, they’ll simulate these biological systems—designing and programming virtual creatures that react to light, sound, and movement. Inspired by VAI Education’s live animal ambassadors, campers will blend scientific inquiry with coding logic to engineer unique, interactive life forms.

Guided Activities

  • Meet and study live animals to explore how real-world adaptations inspire digital design.
  • Learn coding concepts such as conditional and nested logic.
  • Design and program virtual organisms that sense and respond to their environment.
  • Experiment with simulation and feedback loops to model real biological systems.
