Event description

Description

Want to learn techniques to make your garden more resilient even in times of extreme rain, drought, and heat?

Join Piedmont Picnic with two local gardening experts, Will Hooker and Jeana Myers, to learn their top tips for more resilient gardens!

This 2-hour hands-on gardening workshop is great for beginners looking to master some important gardening basics or for more experienced growers looking to learn new techniques for a more resilient and independent garden! You'll learn top tips from these two local and nationally-renowned gardening experts to make our gardens more resilient in the face of changing climate impacts, including protecting soils, swales, mulch, providing shade and shade structures, irrigation, and more!

As we try our hand at growing these yummy foods, we'll also learn more about the history and traditions around them in our local Raleigh community.

What you'll take away:

  • New knowledge and hands-on skills to grow a more resilient garden at home.
  • Information on protecting soils, swales, mulch, providing shade and shade structures, irrigation, and more to keep your garden growing through the weather extremes.

We're excited to be at Raleigh City Farm for this workshop - a hub for local food and community as well as a beautiful outdoor urban farm location!

Foragable Raleigh. This workshop is one of a pair we're hosting this fall as part of a Foragable Raleigh series to connect us more with our local foodways and build resilience and community through food. Foragable Raleigh is a part of the Foragable Communities initiative.

About the partners:

We believe you'll enjoy your food more if you know the story behind it! Here's how we'll each help you do that.

Will Hooker and Jeana Myers are a husband and wife dynamic duo of gardening expertise that we are lucky to have right here in Raleigh. Jeana Myers is a Wake County Extension agent of Agriculture and Horticulture who educates people on growing their own food every day and Will Hooker is a professor emeritus of horticulture from NCSU and nationally-renowned permaculture expert.

Piedmont Picnic seeks to connect people to their food through hands-on programming that builds skills and builds community. Learn how to produce your favorite food and drink while at the same time being rooted in the relevant history behind our local food traditions, people, and place.

Note: This workshop takes place rain or shine. Please dress comfortably for the weather and ready to get your hands dirty!
