About this event

Do you want to incorporate more conceptual questions and tasks in your teaching? Do you want students to have opportunities to engage in interesting and meaningful tasks? In this webinar, you will have an opportunity to consider three ways to change traditional, skill-based questions and tasks. Reversibility, flexibility, and generalization tasks and questions focus on conceptual understanding—those big ideas that connect topics. When strong connections are made across and within topics, students’ retention and understanding of the mathematical ideas are more robust. In addition, you will see how reversibility, flexibility, and generalizations tasks and questions can motivate and encourage more student engagement and participation. Come join us!

Presenter's bio

Dr. Barbara Dougherty is the Director of the Curriculum Research & Development Group, College of Education, University of Hawai‘i. She is a past member of the Board of Directors, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and past chair of the NCTM Research Committee. She is currently on the US Department of Education Author Panel for revising the 2009 IES practice guide on supporting students who struggle in grades PK–6. Her work centers on developing conceptual understanding in number and algebra, in particular, and on creating strategies to help all students learn. She is the lead author on NSights Math Games for Conceptual Understanding and upcoming MPower, A Path to Understanding Algebra.
