Keep your performance reviews. We're seeing a trend in companies letting go of people and citing poor performance as the reason. When they do this, they get out of paying for severance and unemployment in many cases. Be prepared by saving your reviews. If they are done online, take screenshots.

When should I ask people for recommendations to be added to my profile?

If someone says you did a great job on a project, ask them at the time of the compliment. Don't wait until you are leaving or have already left. They won't be feeling as good about your work as they do at the time they write up a compliment. And also ask them to send a copy to your manager as well.
