Do I need to have experience?

Accepted Answer

No prior experience is need. You will be guided throughout on operation of machines used.

Question 2

What is i3Detroit and how long has it been around? Have you taught classes before?

i3Detroit is the metro area's largest makerspace. It was founded in 2009 and has been in continuous operation since. We are an educational non-profit organization. We have taught tens of classes to the members and the community.

Question 4

What do I do need to bring?

Accepted Answer

All material will be provided by i3. You will also be loaned safety glasses while working in the woodshop and given a mask for sanding. You are welcome to bring your own personal protection equipment if you prefer.

Question 5

Can I use this as a cutting board?

Accepted Answer

It is not recommended that you use epoxy as a cutting board as knives may cut into the epoxy. However, the epoxy and finish we use are both safe for food contact. These boards are recommended as serving or charcuterie boards and as centerpieces in your kitchen of your creation.

Question 6

Should I be concerned about working with epoxy?

Accepted Answer

We use one of the highest quality epoxies on the market, called "Liquid Glass" made by FiberGlass Coatings Inc. It is low odor and VOC free. It is rated as safe for food contact and 100% USA made. We use all appropriate cautions to make sure everyone has a safe and fun learning experience

What can I mix in?

We have a variety of Mica powders available in different colors. These will create an opaque color. We also have dyes of different color for those who wish to create a transparent river, or mix and match (e.g. opaque layer on the bottom, embedments, then transparent or clear layer on top)

Can I embed objects in the epoxy?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Bring your own embedments with you. Make sure you account for the size of the embedments though as we'll want to keep them away from the edges as well as the top and bottom. Depending on whether your embedments float or sink, they'll need different treatment.   Bring them for a dry run Friday

What type of finish do you use?

Accepted Answer

We will apply Rubio Monocoat to the final board and epoxy after sanding. Rubio Monocoat is a premium finish that is is safe for food contact once cured and is one of the best finishes on the market. If you prefer, we have a food-grade mineral oil that you can use instead.

Question 11

What is the wood used for the live edge?

Accepted Answer

We use live edge walnut slabs sourced from Live Edge Detroit, which salvages trees from around the metro area.

Question 12

What are the dimensions of the final board?

Accepted Answer

The board you make will be approx 18  x 10 inches, and about 3/4 to 1 inch thick.
