Event description

crafting resistance

RFID and NFC systems are pervasive -- they exist in passports, credit cards, on keychains, etc. How can people from diverse backgrounds utilize these technologies to create useful, subversive, and/or simple methods for two way communication through crafted objects and body gestures?

Learn basic embroidery/paper craft, wireless RFID communication, and soft circuitry techniques to spread a message that is meaningful to you. No prior knowledge is necessary, only an excitement to learn, play, make, and collaborate. All are welcome and encouraged to join.

Crafting Resistance is a four-part workshop series held by the MFA Design + Technology program at Parsons The New School for Design. We seek to bring the NYC craft, wearable tech, fashion, and open source technology communities together to investigate new modalities of resistance by exploring the hybrid practices eTextile and eCraft fields.

Future workshops will take place every weekend in April. We will focus on thermochromic ink, DIY motors, muscle wire, fabric & paper speaker construction, and RFID communication, in addition to exploring eTextiles as an activist practice.
