About this event
Sudden cardiac arrest claims one life every two minutes, taking more than 350,000 lives a year.
Penfield Ambulance's goal is to get as many community members involved in learning CPR to help in the aid of sudden cardiac arrest and reduce the number of lives lost. For every minute without CPR, survival from witnessed sudden cardiac arrest decreases by 7–10%, so learning CPR today can afford you with a truly life-saving skill.
This course reflects science and education from the Latest Guidelines updates for CPR. It teaches single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application for lay-person, prehospital care, and in-facility environments, focusing on high-quality CPR and team dynamics. This class will meet pre-requisite requirements for general job requirements, OSHA, healthcare providers, and USCG.
The course is designed for anyone who would like to be able to make a difference in a time of need. No medical training is necessary. Participants will learn how to perform CPR, relieve choking, and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely, timely, and effectively.
Objectives:
- Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
- Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
- Recognize when someone needs CPR
- Perform high-quality CPR for an adult and child
- Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
- Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult and child
- Describe when and how to help a choking adult or child
In the Instructor-led course, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. The training reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. BLS and professional rescuers will also complete an open-book written exam.
This course can also be offered in hybrid form. For more information or for any questions, contact chiefparamedic@penfieldambulance.org or 585-872-6060 Ext. 4.
*This training class is FREE to attend for all Penfield & Webster residents, however, a certification card (valid for two years) may be obtained for a nominal fee.
Frequently asked questions
Yes we do! All classes offer registration including American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Saver or Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification cards. Please select the appropriate registration type when booking your class to ensure you receive a certification card, if desired.
Yes, Penfield Ambulance offers classes aligned with the American Heart Association (AHA), which is required in many employment settings. We offer both Heart Saver and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Heart Saver is intended for the layperson rescuer, while BLS is geared toward healthcare.
AHA instructors undergo rigorous training and must meet specific credentialing requirements. AHA develops its own guidelines based on recommendations from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation. These updates are widely regarded as the global gold standard for resuscitation science.
If you are a community member simply looking to learn the life-saving skill of CPR, a certification card is likely not necessary. For employers requiring CPR training, a certification card is likely needed. All healthcare/Emergency Services personnel likely need certification cards as well.
Penfield Ambulance CPR classes cover topics including: Adult/Child/Infant CPR, choking, and AED use. First Aid is not widely discussed in the curriculum of this class, as the focus is hands-on and conceptual understanding of hands-only CPR, rescue breathing, choking relief, and AED use.
