Event description

Description

Please join intelligence historian Rory Cormac and political scientist Austin Carson on Monday, November 19, for a discussion of the history and politics of international covert action. They will discuss and reflect on their recently published books on the subject: Cormac's Disrupt and Deny: Spies, Special Forces, and the Secret Pursuit of British Foreign Policy (Oxford UP 2018) and Carson's Secret Wars: Covert Conflict in International Politics (Princeton UP 2018).

Along with overviews of their books' main findings, Cormac and Carson will jointly reflect on the emergence of covert action as a topic of study in History and International Relations, recent events such as Russian election hacking, and the scholarly promise of studying secrecy for both historians and social scientists. The event will conclude with a Q&A session.

"Covert Action in World Politics: A Joint Book Discussion" will take place in Reynolds Club South Lounge from 4pm to 5:30pm. It is open to the public and all members of the university community are encouraged to join. The event sponsors are UChicago's CPOST, CISSR, and CIR.

Rory Cormac is an Associate Professor of International Relations at the University of Nottingham. Austin Carson is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago.

Both books will be available for purchase from the Seminary Co-op at the event.
