Overview

This workshop gives yardmen, sawyers, edgermen, sales and office staff, and management an introduction to hardwood lumber inspection.

This three-day workshop will include a thorough study and explanation of the NHLA Rules Book, empathizing the basics of hardwood lumber inspection and the manufacturing of railroad ties.

Course meets March 23-25, 2026; 8:00 am - 4:00 pm each day

Course fee includes: NHLA Rules Book, course handouts, coffee and muffins, lunches, and a quality grading stick.

Day 1: Introduction, Species Identification, Surface measurement, Standard Grades, and Cutting Unit Method.

Day 2: General Instructions, Defect Limitations, Species Exemptions, Manufacturing Standards, and Hands-On Grading.

Day 3: Characteristics vs Defects, Kiln Dried Lumber, Hands-On Grading, and Sawmill Tour.
