WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION


Registration and coffee: 8:30 am - 9:00 am

Session 1: 9:00 am-12 noon

Attendees will learn:

  • 5 steps toward developing an emotionally intelligent classroom

  • Interventions for students who do not respond to traditional classroom strategies

  • Planning for behavioral “triage”

  • Building a “tool box” to help students cope

  • Teaching students “cause and effect” behavioral relationships

  • Effective behavior systems in a self-contained class

Session 2: 12:45 pm-3:45pm

Attendees will learn:

  • Holding students accountable for the choices they make

  • Teaching students who resist accountability

  • Teaching through the “extinction burst”

  • Using “time out”, “calming,” and “thinking rooms”

  • Teachers and Paraprofessionals: Complementing efforts to support students

  • Using data: measuring the integrity of your behavioral program

  • Using data: assessing whether a student needs a new placement

This clinic-style presentation offers educators and special education professionals a chance to deepen their understanding of students with social and emotional learning challenges, and to develop skills through hands-on learning.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER...

Dr. Buzz Mingin is a nationally-recognized speaker specializing in children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional disorders. He has several published books, is the president of Buzz’s Bookworm Inc., a comprehensive support center for students with behavioral and emotional afflictions, and the director of World Karate Studio, a martial arts program that teaches social skills and behavioral management to children and adolescents with disabilities. Dr. Buzz has his Master’s Degree in Psychology and his Ph.D. in Education, is a New Jersey Certified School Social Worker, a professional development provider for New Jersey Department of Education, a qualified expert witness for New Jersey Superior Courts, a Certified Forensic Counselor by the American Board of Forensic Counselors International and has contracted with many public and private schools throughout New Jersey.
