Event description

Description

What's happening on Cooper Street? A lot! Join us for pop-up exhibits, performance and story-telling, and a celebration of the 30th anniversary of Cooper Street and Cooper-Grant as historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you have ever lived, worked, or attended classes on or near Cooper Street -- or if you're curious about the many organizations and residents in our neighborhood -- this event is for you. Past and present neighbors, you're invited to bring photographs, memories, and ideas to add to a digital collection and help create a new history of one of Camden's most historic streets. Organizations, individuals, businesses, and departments will be on hand to showcase their activities. Or come to simply mingle and enjoy some light refreshments -- all are welcome!

Featured entertainment
Just for the Record - A Multimedia One-Man Show
Historian, artist, pianist, singer/songwriter and veteran teacher Christopher Andrew Maier channels Eldridge Reeves Johnson, an astute Camden machinist who perfected the wind-up gramophone to deliver quality music to the world through the Victor Talking Machine Company.

Exhibits begin at 5 p.m. Program/entertainment begins at 6 p.m.

FAQs

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

For directions and public transit options, link here.

We encourage using public transportation, but free and secure parking will be available for guests in the Camden Technology Center Parking Garage located at 601 Cooper Street, Camden, NJ 08102. Take your parking ticket with you. After the event, return to the parking garage lobby and present your event ticket at the security desk to receive free parking. Exhibitors please note: The parking garage is about two blocks from the event venue, so please let us know if you need help transporting your items to and from the Campus Center.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Send an email to Charlene Mires, cmires@camden.rutgers.edu.

If I sign up for an exhibit table, how can I use it?

Any way you wish! This is your chance to shape this event to be what you want. Promote your activities, introduce your team, display photos or other items about your history, tell a story, create a game or artwork -- anything that highlights activities or history of Cooper Street and nearby neighbors is welcome. (But no food, please -- catering will be supplied.) Please note that you are responsible for the security of any items that you bring.

How can I find out if my family ever lived on Cooper Street?

You can check out our database (a work in progress, gathered from city directories and the U.S. Census, c. 1840-1940):
Link to the Google Doc.

I have photographs or memories of Cooper Street, are you interested?

Yes! This is your chance to include your history in Cooper Street's history. We will have a team of public historians to scan photographs and gather information. In the future, we hope to do more extensive interviews. If you give permission, your contributions may become part of a digital archive.

What else will be happening?

In addition to enjoying the featured entertainment, you will be able to offer opinions about a range of stories about Cooper Street and ways that they might be shared. We will make this interesting and fun! Your feedback will contribute to the writing of a new history of Cooper Street and plans for highlighting this history to make Cooper Street an even greater community asset.

You can also enter to win door prizes. For each exhibit table or activity you visit, you'll receive a chance to enter to win your choice of any of the prizes (and if you would like to offer a prize, just indicate during your registration or let us know).

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? Yes, if you want to take advantage of the free parking. Otherwise, no.

Can I update my registration information? Yes.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable? Yes.

Is it OK if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? Yes.
