Overview

Join us for our November Cookbook Club, where we will be making recipes from Saghar Setareh's Pomegranates & Artichokes.

Join Bol for our November Cookbook Club, as we make recipes from Saghar Setareh’s Pomegranates & Artichokes. A photographer and writer, Setareh was born in Tehran and moved to Rome at the age of 22 to study at the Fine Art Academy. Alone in a new country, food was how she explored her new surroundings and stayed connected to her roots. Her stunning cookbook, illustrated with her own photography, chronicles her culinary journey from Iran to Italy with recipes that honour both traditions, as well as the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean ones that stretch in between.

Divided into three sections representing stops on Saghar’s culinary “road trip”–Iran, In Between, and Italy–this book features more than 80 recipes celebrating the foods of these regions. Among the highlights are a simple Iranian breakfast platter, a celebratory Persian feast, Sicilian-style stuffed artichokes, guinea hen braised with pomegranate, sweet–sour meatballs from Aleppo, and a Roman ricotta and wild cherry pie.

Make one of these recipes, or one of the dozens of others in the book, and join us for our fifth Cookbook Club of the year by registering for a spot via Eventbrite and then signing up to make and bring a recipe . During the event, we will eat together, while talking about what happens when recipes are unconstrained by borders, and how our culinary histories are both shared and transformed through the immigrant experience.

To participate, reserve your spot via this Eventbrite. Then, select a recipe from Pomegranates & Artichokes and sign up to bring it via this spreadsheet. Copies of Pomegranates & Artichokes are available for sale at Bol's pop-up at Creative Grounds in DC (1822 North Capitol St. NW). If you can't access a copy of the book, you can also reach out to us at info@bol.coop and we can share a photograph of any recipe you like with you.

Some notes: We will not have an oven or microwave on hand to heat up the food. We are also striving to make this event zero-waste, so please bring your own servingware, plate, cutlery, napkins, and water!
