Conversation + Remembrance Workshops at Black Iris
Overview
Festival founder Barrett Holmes Pitner discusses American freedom, followed by a Q&A, a book signing of the critically acclaimed The Crime Without a Name: Ethnocide and the Erasure of Culture, and a series of breakout sessions — including an altar-building workshop and a songwriting workshop with Altars Music Artist Caroline Scruggs.
About the Songwriting Workshop
Ever wanted to write a song but didn’t know where to start? In this two-hour workshop, you’ll be guided step-by-step through a simple songwriting formula to create your own Heart Song — an ode to where you come from, honoring what came before you, and how that shapes who you are and where you’re headed.
You’ll write your own lyrics, learn how to shape a melody, and experience the joy of bringing your words to life. Some participants will even have their lyrics set to music on the spot by workshop leader Caroline Scruggs.
About Caroline
Caroline Scruggs is a Richmond-based music artist, songwriter, and world-traveling educator who has taught songwriting to more than 400 people across the globe.
