Frequently asked questions

Are new dancers welcomed?

Absolutely! We love our new dancers! There's a lesson at 7:30 pm every Friday. Many dancers continue to attend lessons long after they've mastered the basics, just to keep learning.

Do I need a partner?

NO! Many people come without partners, and most couples only dance a few dances with each other during an evening. Try dancing with a new partner at every opportunity you find! Who knows, you might be meeting a brand new life-long friend!

What should I wear?

The Spanish Ballroom has no central heating or air conditioning, so in January people may start dancing in coats, but soon warm up the room. There are water fountains, but you probably want to bring a water bottle–it is a real workout. In the summer, consider shorts, sweatband and a change of shirt.

Do I need special shoes?

To protect the 100-year-old dance floor, we ask people to bring shoes that are not soiled. People dance in many types of shoes, or even barefoot, but for the best experience, we recommend shoes with a smooth leather sole so you can glide when swinging your partner.

What is Contra Dancing?

Contra dancing is a folk dance that developed in the United States based on folk dances from England, Scotland and France. Couple face other couples in long lines, dance forms called by the Caller, then move on to dance the same forms with new couples in the line. You don't have to bring a partner!

What else do I need to know?

Contra dancing is very forgiving - if you don't do something right the first time, you get another chance in a few moments! Dancers are warm and welcoming to new members of our community and many dancers keep coming back year after year. The live music is great and the dancing even better.
