Event description
Contingency Management (CM) is the most efficacious psychosocial intervention for substance use disorders.

About this Event

Course Description:

Substance use is a growing problem among veterans and military members. As an evidenced-based treatment, Contingency Management (CM) is the most efficacious psychosocial intervention for substance use disorders. However, implementation of CM in community clinical programs remains low, due to a range of factors, including limited understanding and misconceptions about CM. This course provides an introduction to this highly efficacious and effective intervention. This course reviews the behavioral principles underlying the foundations of CM, various CM protocols targeting abstinence from specific substances and/or other behavior change, CM clinical competencies, and program implementation challenges. Participants will also have an opportunity to gain experiential learning of CM through role plays, in which CM clinical competencies are demonstrated/practiced in diverse CM scenarios.

Course Objectives:

1. Review the evidence base for Contingency Management (CM) as an efficacious treatment for substance use disorders.

2. Understand the behavioral principles on which CM is built

3. Discuss the structure of CM treatment protocols

4. Gain familiarity with CM clinical competencies

5. Gain experiential learning through CM role plays

6. Describe the various applications of CM in facilitating behavior change

7. Discuss the programmatic (administrative, clinical, and cultural) challenges and solutions to CM implementation
