Constructing a Liberatory Consciousness to Improve Black Maternal Health
Overview
This intensive experiential learning course (meeting once a month for nine months) is designed for healthcare professionals, birth workers, health policy agents, administrators, researchers, educators, consumer rights and birth justice advocates, organizers, CBOs, funders and birthing people. You will gain a practical understanding of the multifaceted and intersecting impacts of interpersonal and structural racism as it impacts birth outcomes and construct practical strategies for personal growth and systemic transformation. If you are involved anywhere along the birth care/reproductive health continuum, and you are frustrated by the changes you see occuring, this course is for you. Expect a scholarly examination of the issues that create health inequities, a historical overview, challenging and practical insights from real world learning, guest lectures from experts in the field from across the nation, all presented through a womanist lens from a leading expert in Black Maternal Health. This is the course no institution would dare to offer in today's climate, but one that is needed to make real and lasting positive change. Be prepared for enlightening lectures, thought provoking discussions, stimulating reading and homework assignments, but no tests! Transfomation of your lives and work environments will be the test. The purpose fo this course is not to arm you with facts and figures but to equip you to make the real world changes that Black childbearning families deserve.

Would you like to learn to teach this course? We are offering a facilitator training course to be taught concurrently with the current 9 month course. Facilitators will meet bi-monthly, first, to attend the course, and second, to attend a facilitator's course. Joining the facilitator course is a competitive process. You must fill out an application and have an online interview. If selected, there is a tuition fee of $1500 payable in two installments. We will select up to three candidates for the facilitator course. Once the course is completed, you will be able to teach this course for Hakima Payne Consulting.

Theories and Frameworks for Transformational Change-April 18, 2025
The first session will begin with introductions, ice breakers, and an overview of the course. We will discuss and define; Womanist Theory, The Five Levels of Racism, Liberatory Consciousness Theory and the Cycle of Respectful Maternity Care. We will discuss the importance and preeminence of Black women scholars and Black women's voices in the approach to our topic.Homework: Read selected chapters of " Medical Bondage" by Deirdre Cooper Owens
A Historical Overview of the US Maternity Care System- May 16, 2025
Session two will include a brief overview of maternity care in the US, with a special emphasis on historic events that impacted Black health outcomes. We will have readings from the text: "Medical Bondage" and discuss historic markers in Black maternal health such as the Sheppard Towner Act, the Flexnor Report, the loss of Black midwifery alongside the rise of Nurse Midwifery, and the role of J. Marion Sims. We will also discuss the works of artist, Michelle Browder and how she has changed the narrative around J. Marion Sim's legacy. Homework: Selected readings from the book, "Reproducing Race" by Khiara Bridges
White Supremist Constructs in Healthcare and Health Policy- June 20, 2025
Session 3 we will examine the concepts of White Supremacy and Black Liberation. We will discuss the tenets of white supremist culture and how they shape our thinking around healthcare and the evolution of US medical practice. We will determine the role of bias and the forms the discrimination takes in healthcare. These concepts will be examined through the writings of poets, scholars, essayists, and novelists such as Audre Lorde, Octavia Butler, Paulo Freire, and Rupi Kaur. Homework: Selected readings from "Reproductive Injustice" and videos by Dr. Dana-Ain Davis.
