In the early fifteenth century Filippo Brunelleschi solved a problem that had been troubling artists for some time: how to create a convincing illusion of three-dimensional forms on a flat surface. His insight was a creative breakthrough that revolutionized western art, and its pervasive influence is still with us today.

But is it correct?

Is it merely a technical tool, or does it also reveal purely aesthetic principles? From the beginning, its inventors understood that the apparent correlation between strict perspective theory and human vision was not perfect.

So how and why is perspective so relevant to visual art?
